While some try to categorize AC/DC as heavy metal, hard rock, or some more specific genre, the members of AC/DC have come out and said they’re just creating good, old fashioned “rock ‘n’ roll” and resist any further categorization.
AC/DC was started by brothers Angus Young on lead guitar and Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar.
AC/DC was formed in Sydney, Australia.
AD/DC performed its first concert on December 31, 1973. The band soon after released its official debut single “Can I Sit Next to You, Girl” on July 22, 1974. Their debut album High Voltage followed with an Australian only release on February 17, 1975. Later that year the band released their second Australian album T.N.T.. Songs from both albums appeared on the band’s first international album, which dropped on April 30, 1976. It was also called High Voltage.
The arrival at the name "AC/DC" mainly was delightfully coincidental. The idea made sense to the duo when their sister, Margaret Young, spotted the abbreviation on a sewing machine. Malcolm and Angus Young agreed that the symbol "AC/DC," which means “alternating current/ direct current,” was an accurate description of the band’s raw and electrifying rock ‘n’ roll sound.
When AC/DC first formed in November 1973, there were five members:
By 1974, however, the only original members of the band left were its founders: Angus and Malcolm Young.
Larry Van Kriedt was fired from the band shortly after the band recorded their first single in early 1974. The band played with several bassists over the next few years before finally settling on Cliff Williams in 1977.
Similarly, In February 1974, Colin Burgess left the band. There were several temporary replacements over the next few months with Phil Rudd becoming a more permanent drummer in 1975. He remained with the band until 1983, departed, and then returned in 1994.
Additionally, in September 1974, Bon Scott replaced Dave Evans as lead vocalist and remained with the band until his death in 1980, at which point he was replaced with Brian Johnson who has been a stable member of the band for well over 40 years.
Malcolm Young is the primary songwriter for AC/DC, but Bon Scott, Angus Young, and others did contribute to the songwriting process and even created lyrics for some of AC/DC’s biggest hits.
AC/DC was tremendously influenced by British blues-rock, particularly the Beatles, not just in terms of music but also in terms of fashion and performativity with the members of the Beatles often appearing in remarkable outfits and costumes while performing packed shows full of thousands of spectators.
Mark Evans joined AC/DC as bassist in 1975, but by May 1977, tension between Angus Young and Evans reached a boiling point with Angus firing Evans from the band, citing "musical differences."
Bon Scott was out at a London club on a February evening in 1980. Upon arriving home, his friend found he had passed out in the car and left him there to sober up. However, on February 19, 1980, Scott was found unresponsive. An official Coroner's report indicated that Bon Scott died from "acute alcohol poisoning" at 33 years of age.
Malcolm Young permanently retired from AD/DC in mid-2014 due to his recently diagnosed dementia. On November 18, 2017, he passed away from the disease and its complications at 64 years of age.
AC/DC has had 2,212 concerts.
