Johnny Cash is one of the world’s most influential 20th century American musicians. He is praised for his songwriting, singing, and guitar playing talents, as well as for his innovative blend of country, western, and rockabilly music. He began writing songs and learned to play the guitar in the early 1950s while serving in the military.
Upon being discharged, he began pursuing a professional musical career that lasted nearly 50 years. During that time he sold over 90 million records worldwide and produced hit songs like "Folsom Prison Blues," "Hey, Porter," "A Boy Named Sue," "I Walk the Line," and dozens more. When performing and in public, he regularly dressed in black and came to be known as the "Man in Black," also the name of one of his most famous hits.
Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. When he was three years old, the family moved to Dyess, Arkansas.
Though Johnny Cash might be best known as a country musician, he embraced a diverse range of genres and integrated them together to create a new and unique sound that’s since inspired some of the leading rock, country, and gospel artists currently performing. His wide range of recordings earned him inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and Country Music Hall of Fame.
Johnny Cash was 6’2” (1.88m) tall.
While Johnny Cash was successful in his musical career, his image was not squeaky clean. He had several run-ins with the law for various charges. He was arrested seven times for misdemeanor incidences like reckless driving, public drunkenness, and drug possession between 1959 and 1968.
One of the most notable arrests in his record includes getting arrested for trespassing on private property to pick flowers. After the arrest, Cash kicked his cell door so hard that his toe broke. His song "Starkville City Jail" is based on that encounter.
The same year, Cash was also arrested for smuggling stimulants in his guitar case. Despite the short jail sentences and multiple arrests, he never spent more than a night in jail and never received a prison sentence.
Johnny Cash was married two times. In 1951, he met his first wife, Vivian Liberto, at a roller skating rink in San Antonio, Texas. They were later married on August 7, 1954, at St. Ann's Roman Catholic church in San Antonio. Liberto filed for divorce in 1966 due to Cash's alcohol and drug abuse as well as his acts of adultery and constant touring.
Cash was later married to June Carter of the iconic Carter Family. Cash proposed to June in 1968, and they married the same year in Franklin, Kentucky. They remained wed until June Carter/Cash’s death in 2003.
Johnny Cash had a total of five children, four daughters with his first wife Vivian and one son with his second wife June:
Johnny Cash was also step-father to June's other two daughters from earlier marriages.
Johnny Cash died on September 12, 2003 in Nashville, Tennessee, due to diabetes complications. He was 71 years old and was buried alongside his wife, June Carter, in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
Johnny Cash suffered a devastating loss at an early age when his older brother Jack died. While cutting wood, Jack was accidentally pulled himself into a table, nearly cutting himself in two.
Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash in the biographical drama Walk The Line based on Cash’s life.
