Lynyrd Skynyrd is a pioneer of the Southern Rock genre. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964, the band performed for a decade before releasing its debut studio album "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)" in 1974. It included the songs "Free Bird," "Simple Man," "Gimme Three Steps," and "Tuesday's Gone." Later that year, the band released its second album, "Second Helping," which featured the single "Sweet Home Alabama," written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man." On October 20, 1977, the band's plane crashed en route to Baton Rouge from Greenville, South Carolina. Three members died including founder and frontman Ronne Van Zant. The band subsequently broke up but reunited in 1987 with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny taking over as lead singer and songwriter. Gary Rossington, the band's last surviving founding member, died on March 5, 2023.

April 27, 1977 - See my photos Uploaded.... My friend Charlie Craig and I were seniors at Meadowbrook High School in 1977. Charlie was born with muscular dystrophy and was bound to his wheelchair. We heard that Charlie’s favorite band, Lynyrd Skynyrd was coming to the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia on their “Street Survivors” tour on 4-27-1977. The best I can remember it was me (Alan Thompson), Charlie Craig, Robbie Davis, Ronnie Heath and a few others. I told Charlie we will get him to the Richmond Coliseum to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, his favorite band and probably the most popular band in the country. I was 16 years old and didn’t have a car. I worked at Thursdays restaurant with Robbie Davis so we talked to one of the waitress about giving us a ride to the concert. The deal was if she drove us to the concert we would buy her ticket. I think tickets were around $8 or so back then. The concert was general admission and you could stand on the floor in front of the stage. We planned to get there super early so we could get Charlie right up to the stage. I think we got the an hour or so before people started to arrive. While others were smuggling various things into the concert, I smuggled in my Minolta SRT-101 35mm camera with a 50mm 1.8 lens loaded with Ektachrome 400 film. Here are some of the photos I took that night. As you can see in my photos we could touch the stage. After the start-up band finished and Skynyrd started to play, the crowd pushed us really tight to the stage and I could see that Charlie was getting scared so 4 of us “youths” (mentioned in the newspaper article) lifted Charlie up above our heads so he could see. The crowd went crazy. All of a sudden lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant came over to us and grabbed Charlie’s wheelchair and pulled him up onto the stage. I remember a Richmond cop was on his way over to us and someone grabbed the cops hat and threw it up on stage. If I remember correctly, when bass player Leon Wilkeson gave Charlie his hat, he put the cops hat on and wore it for the rest of the concert. Ronnie dedicated Free Bird to Charlie. The newspaper mentions that after the show Charlie went backstage to share “drinks and pizza” with the band. Charlie told me it was much more than “drinks and pizza” ! Charlie was with the band all night. One place they went was a bar on Broad Street called Much More. Like the newspaper article says; Ronnie didn’t bring Charlie up on stage for PR reasons, Ronnie says “ I did it from the heart.” Alan Thompson Richmond, Va
On 12th Feb 1977 Lynryd Skynrd played at The Refectory in Leeds - not Blackpool. They did not play in Blackpool at all in 1977. On 13th February 1977 they played Lancaster University, Lancaster - not The Refectory, Leeds. Hope this info is of use.

I was at the July 3, 1977 concert by Lynryd Skynryd. It was hot and the water trucks from the dirt track were circling the perimeter with the water shooting out. There were vendors selling weed in the crowd on the floor. Some were in seats around and some were on the center track grounds. Every time the truck would come around there would be girls on it with no tops on. Girls were on shoulders with their tops off. The crowd was peaceful. There were thousands of people. I slept in my car the night before it opened. When they paled FREE BIRD.... the crowd was at a fever pitch..... the crescendo built and as did you awareness of what was happening. Till this day....44 years later, the hair on my neck stands up every time I hear FREE BIRD. It was magical.......
This concert list is a crock of shit. l saw Skynyrd 3 times at the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, NC and not a damn one of them is on this list. First time it was Grinderswitch, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Skynyrd. Second time was Charlie Daniels then Skynyrd. Third time it was Goose Creek Symphony, Z Z Top then Skynyrd. Lynyrd Skynyrd has its roots in Jacksonville, Florida.
Founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd included Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns with Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom completing the original lineup.
Prior to settling on Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band had several names including
Van Zant and his bandmates decided to change their band name from "The One Percent" to eliminate taunts that they only had "one percent" talent. They finally settled on Leonard Skinnerd, a reference to a character in Allan Sherman's song and a mocking tribute to their PE teacher with the same name. They adopted the more distinct spelling of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1970.
On October 20, 1977, a plane carrying the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed. Despite this tragedy, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 for its first tour in 10 years. Members of the second iteration of Lynyrd Skynyrd included survivors of the plane crash (Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle) along with Ed King and Ron Vannie Zant's younger brother Johnny Van Zant. Since that reunion tour, the band released several studio albums and toured extensively, albeit with an ever-changing lineup of members.
Six individuals lost their lives in the October 20, 1977 plane crash including founding member and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray Jr.
Shortly before boarding their tour plane on October 20, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd played at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina. Their next performance was scheduled at Louisiana State University but was abruptly cancelled.
