Sepultura was formed in 1984 in Belo Horizonte in Brazil by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Embracing elements of thrash metal, groove metal, death metal, and industrial metal with elements of indigenous, Brazilian music, nature sounds, and post-hardcore punk, Sepultura catapulted to the forefront of the second wave of thrash during the late '80s and early and mid-'90s. Keeping in line with the metal genre, the word "Sepultura" means "grave" in Portuguese.
