In the early 1960s, The Beach Boys emerged as one of the most influential rock & roll bands in history. With songs like "Surfin'" (1961), "Surfin' Safari" (1962), "Surfin' USA" (1963), and other surf-influenced singles, The Beach Boys quickly developed a reputation as the world's leading surf rock-pop group, differentiating itself drastically from other popular rock bands of the 1960s, like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. However, The Beach Boys are more than just a surfer band. Over the last few decades, the band has experimented with many genres, including traditional rock & roll, R&B, pop, jazz, psychedelia, punk, lo-fi, progressive rock, and more. Today, The Beach Boys are considered one of the most commercially successful, critically acclaimed, and longest-lasting bands in recent music history. For over six decades, the band has continued touring and releasing new music for fans to enjoy.

The Beach Boys was founded by three brothers: Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson who had been playing music together for years. The band’s roots trace back to the late 1950s when Brian asked his high school friend Alan Jardine to join the band that would eventually become The Beach Boys. Jardine accepted and encouraged Brian to invite Mike Love, Brian's cousin, to join. Love also accepted, and in 1961 The Beach Boys released its first single “Surfin'.”
Dennis Wilson passed away in 1983 followed by his brother Carl in 1998. However, three of the original members of The Beach Boys are still living:
While The Beach Boys did not release its first official single until November 27, 1961, members of the band had been creating music together since the late 1950s. While still teenagers, founding members Brian Wilson and Mike Love were performing concerts at their high school in Hawthorne, California along with other friends. Prior to this, Brian and his brothers Dennis and Carl, all founding members of The Beach Boys were already creating music together as children.
The original five members of the Beach Boys are all from Hawthorne, California where they formed the band.
Both The Beach Boys and The Beatles were signed to Capitol Records. Other big acts signed by Capital include Frank Sinatra, fDuran Duran, Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, and many others.
On October 1, 1962, The Beach Boys released their first album Surfin’ Safari.
Before becoming "The Beach Boys," the band was called "The Pendletones." This name was suggested by Mike Love. At that time, Pendleton was a popular type of woolen shirt worn. However, the executives at Capital Record changed the name to "The Beach Boys," a better reflection of the surfer-style music and aesthetic the band had already embraced.
The Hondells did a cover of the song "Little Honda." It reached ninth on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1964.
It is rumored that Paul McCartney once called “God Only Knows” the “greatest song ever written.” After hearing it, he and John Lennon are said to have been inspired to write The Beatles song “Here, There, and Everywhere.”
The Beach Boys has had 5,515 concerts.
The Beach Boys is most often considered to be Rock, Pop, United States, Pop Rock, Singer-Songwriter, Classic Rock, Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Mellow Gold, Psychedelic Pop, Adult Standards, Baroque Pop, Brill Building Pop, Surf, Surf Rock, Sunshine Pop, Progressive Pop, and Vocal Surf.
