Queen, Thin Lizzy Up until recently, Ireland has not been known as a hotbed of rock and roll. But now that Thin Lizzy, which performed in concert with Queen last night at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House, is firmly established as one of the most exciting new bands of the mid-‘70s, that situation may be about to change. Bass player and lead singer Phil Lynott, who wrote last summer’s hit single “The Boys are Back in Town,” and played last night with a dash and verve that contrasted sharply with Queen’s mannered, routine performance, is at the center of most of this Celtic excitement. Flanked by the twin Les Paul guitars of Gary Moore and Scott Gorham, he was perhaps strongest on “Warriors,” an impassioned tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman. The blues roots hinted at in that choice of heroes was confirmed on “Baby, Drive Me Crazy,” when Gorham, the quartet’s only American member (“and we only let him in the band because he was born on St. Patrick’s Day,” joshes Lynott), delivered a stunningly funky solo that bracketed Lynott’s appealing intensity and drive. — Larry Rohter The Washington Post
