Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where and when did the Red Hot Chili Peppers form?

Red Hot Chili Peppers was formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The four founding members were lead vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea (born Michale Peter Balzary), guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons. Before settling on the name “Red Hot Chili Peppers,” they performed as “Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem” at the Rhythm Lounge.

Who is in the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

The Red Hot Chili Peppers was originally formed by Kiedis, Flea, Slovak, and Irons in 1983. However, Slovak and Irons quit shortly after the band began. They were then replaced by Cliff Martinez and Jack Sherman.

Slovak rejoined in 1985 when Sherman was fired while Irons returned after Martinez was fired in 1986. In 1988, Slovak died of a heroin overdose, pushing Irons into a depression that caused him to quit the band.

John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined in 1988. Frusciante left in 1992, returned in 1998, left again in 2009, and then rejoined in 2019. Smith, however, has remained the band’s permanent drummer since 1988 while Kiedis and Flea have remained since starting the band in 1983.

Who in the Red Hot Chili Peppers has died?

Jack Sherman — the guitarist who replaced Hillel Slovak on their debut album — died on August 18, 2020, due to a heart attack at his home in Savannah, Georgia. Additionally, Slovak died on June 25, 1988 from a heroin overdose.

Why did John Frusciante leave the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992?

John Frusciante became overwhelmed and uncomfortable with the sudden popularity they were getting, and he abruptly left the band while they were on tour in 1992. He was replaced by Dave Navarro.

What Red Hot Chili Peppers Album was Dave Navarro on and why did he leave the band?

After John Frusciante left the group in 1992, he was replaced by Dave Navarro, who perfromed guitar and backing vocals on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’s sixth full-lenth album One Hot Minute. According to Anthony Kiedis, Navarro left because of creative differences with the band but called it a “mutual parting.”

When did John Frusciante return and why did he leave again in 2009?

When Dave Navarro parted with the group in 1998, John Frusciante decided to return to the group. He left again in 2009 saying that he wasn’t in the right place “mentally,” and he was an “imbalanced mess.”
