Joe Ely (February 9, 1947 - December 5, 2025) was a musician from Lubbock, Texas who rose to popularity as one of the central figures within the Texas-centered progressive country movement of the 1970s and 1980s. He began his career as a member of the Flatlanders, which he co-formed in the early 1970s. By 1973, the band had broken up with each member going on to lead successful solo careers. Ely released his debut self-titled album dropped in 1977. It was the first of 16, with "Love and Freedom" (2025) being his last. On December 15, 2025, Joe Ely passed away at the age of 78 due to complications from dementia and pneumonia.
