Stray Kids was originally the title of a South Korean reality television show in which the future members of the band competed in individual challenges in order to become worthy of preforming together. The show aired weekly between from mid-October to mid-December of 2017.
Of course, the band won the right to perform together with even the eliminated members returning in the second to last episode. Stray Kids then formally debuted in the tenth and final episode on December 19, 2017.
They debuted their first single “District 9” on March 25, 2018 with their first album I am Not dropping the next day.
When Stray Kids debuted in 2017, there were nine members:
Since that time, some of the founding members have left the band with some returning and others pursuing solo careers.
Kim Woo Jin left the group in October 2019 when JYP Entertainment, the record label which signed Stray Kids, terminated his contract citing “personal circumstances” as the reason. Shortly thereafter, he started a new Instagram account and rebranded himself as a solo artist, signing with 10x Entertainment as the first artist on the label in early 2020.
In February 2021, Hyun Jin went on hiatus from Stray Kids due to allegations of bullying from former classmates. Hyun issued an apology letter stating that he would be halting his activities with the group to reflect on his past behaviors. He was welcomed back into the band in August 2021 after JYP Entertainment deemed him ready to return.
Hyun Jin is the tallest in Stray Kids, with a height of 5’10.5″ (179 cm).
