Tool Concert History

Tool is a progressive metal band formed in 1990, by Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones (guitar), Paul D'Amour (bass), and Danny Carey (drums). The band released their first album "Undertow" in 1993. It charted in the top 100 in the US, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. D'Amour left the band in 1995 and was replaced by Justin Chancellor. In 1996, Tool released its sophomore album "Ænima" (1996), which included the band’s first Grammy-winning single, also called "Ænima." "Lateralus" (2001), the band’s third album, was the first of three to consecutively top the US Billboard 200 chart. It was followed by “10,000 Days” (2006) and “Fear Innoculum” (2019), the band’s first album in 13 years. The album’s 10-minute and 21-second title track holds the Guinness World Record for the longest song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it peaked at 93. Keenan is also a founding member of A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long is a Tool concert?

A tool concert lasts for 2 hours and 30 minutes on average. There will be a 30-minute opening act before Tool's performance. The band will then play a two hour set of their most biggest singles and fan favorites. Their shows also come packed with smashing hits and stunning visual displays.

What should you expect at a Tool concert?

A Tool concert is an experience of a lifetime — just ask anyone who's ever attended a show. At every concert, you can expect a great show with a stunning light display, smoke, and pyrotechnics set to some of the greatest progressive rock hits from the last 30+ years.

What should you wear to a Tool concert?

There is nothing specific you need to wear to a Tool concert, but specific venues may have specific regulations about prohibited attire. Generally, it’s a great idea to throw on a Tool T-Shirt or hoodie with some metal-inspired attire like leather jackets and ripped jeans. If you’re planning on going into the mosh pit, just remember to wear closed toe shoes!

How much are Tool concert tickets?

Prices vary depending on the location of the concert. Most concerts in the U.S. are around the $100-$200 range; however, tickets can easily go much, much higher. Front row seats or VIP packages can cost several hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Prices for Tool tickets often are higher during international tours rather than ones which take place in the US alone. High demand, low availability, and premium seat options can also lead to price increases.

Where can you buy Tool music online?

All major digital music streaming services offer Tool’s music online for free. You can access them from platforms such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Deezer. If you’d like to purchase the band's songs or albums, you can do so through platforms like Amazon Music, iTunes, and Bandcamp.

What genre of music does Tool create?

Many of Tool’s fans refer to their music as metal or progressive metal. The band’s style encompasses many genres, though, and is very difficult to fit the band into a single box. There are elements of alternative metal, art rock, progressive rock, nu-metal, and much more. Some have called their music the “thinking person’s metal band.”

Who are the original members of Tool?

The original members of Tool were:

  • Maynard James Keenan on vocals
  • Adam Jones on guitar
  • Danny Carey on drums and percussion
  • Paul D'Amour on bass

In 1995, Justin Chancellor replaced D'Amour on bass. D'Amour has since participated in numerous bands including Replicants, Lusk, Lesser Key, and Ministry. He also performed under the stage name Feersum Ennjin.

What other bands has Maynard James Keenan performed with?

Before Tool, Maynard James Keenan played bass guiatar for TexA.N.S. and then left to perform vocals for Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty. In 1990, he became a founding member of Tool and, while he never left the band like D'Amour, he has performed with other groups since, including the supergroup Puscifer as the only permanent member and A Perfect Circle, which he cofounded with Billy Howerdel.

When did Tool start releasing music?

Tool was formed in 1989 after Keenan and Jones became acquainted. Keenan played past recordings, and his voice inspired the duo to start a band. They eventually searched for a bass player and a drummer. It took around two years of practice and performing before they signed their first record deal.

Where are the band members of Tool from?

While each member comes from a different location, they all lived in Los Angeles during the time of their formation. Keenan studied visual arts in Michigan before settling in California. Jones went to Los Angeles in hopes of entering the film industry. Carey was already part of the LA music scene, performing for several bands. Chancellor, meanwhile, was born in the United Kingdom.

Why do fans say Tool is the best band ever?

Many fans call Tool the greatest band ever because of their creativity, the political and social overtones in Keenan's lyrics, and the band's experimentation with a variety of genres and sounds. There really is no other band that creates music like Tool. Their music not only delivers a message but also uses a variety of artistic mediums to create an engaging and spectacular listening and viewing experience. Keenan and the other band members always consider all of the elements of their performances — music, costumes, visuals, and synchronization – to make the best music and put on the best show.
