Constantinople featuring Celina Kalluk and Darlene Gijuminag Oct 1, 2023 (7 months ago) The Stage at St. Andrews Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Time: 7:30pm Tickets: https://www.ceciliaconcerts.ca/c...
This unique performance unites three captivating musical traditions deeply rooted in the essence of breath, the vital force connecting all cultures and peoples. Showcasing traditional music of the Mi'kmaq, the enthralling Inuit throat singing technique of Celina Kalluk (replacing the previously scheduled Mongun-ool Ondar), and the soulful sounds of Persian classical music featuring the ney flute, this concert celebrates the power of breath in music. The renowned five-musician ensemble Constantinople, with 20 albums to its credit, includes ney player Kianoush Khalilian. The ensemble is joined by Mi'kmaw drummer and vocalist Darlene Gijuminag, heir to a living Indigenous tradition that finds its source in the sounds of nature, and renowned Nunavut-based Inuk artist, educator, and performer Celina Kalluk. Together, all seven musicians create a musical language that explores common ground within their respective cultural backgrounds. This promises to be an extraordinary collaboration, immersing audience members in the richness of Indigenous and ancestral musical traditions while engaging in a timeless musical dialogue. Presented on Treaty Day, and marking the beginning of Mi'kmaq History Month. Main Stage Concert Series Major Sponsor: Scotiabank. Season Sponsor: Jules Chamberlain / Red Door Realty. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Arts Nova Scotia and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
