IN THE KINGDOM OF MEANING. About 15 years ago born out of the murky swamps of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, lumped within the Southern, Black Sabbath-worshipping NOLA and Metairie Sludge scene (incl. bands such as EYEHATEGOD, Crowbar and Acid Bath) and surrounded by this crushing aura of the ultimate and monolithic, Thou slowly, maliciously yet flawlessly act as an impulsive force on the threshold of the shuddering heaviness of (Funeral) Doom and the oppressive atmospherics of Black and Post-Metal. Driven by commitment to push their respective brands of extreme music into previously unexplored territories, furthermore - not musically, but rather spiritually - the band shares a kinship with 90s Proto Grunge bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, as well as the aesthetic and political impulses and ethic of the obscure 90s DIY Veriform / Ebullition Records HC Punk scene - though having maintained a strictly D.I.Y. philosophy.
Thou are as massive and merciless as they are prolific. Since its inception the band released five full length albums, a vast load of EPs, three collaboration records with Portland's the body (describing these collaborations as “a twilight dungeon crawl exploring the winding, ruined halls of Mad King Duro’s Castle, best friends at your side, enemies crushed beneath your heels, mysteries solved, and treasures found”) - and enough material spread out over splits to make up another six full lengths.
Having a history subsumed in themes of alienation, melancholy and despair, for instance their latest record ’Magus’ (2018) is dedicated to the sacred ego, that wellspring of individuality and unique complexity. Yet every drum chop, every riff and every barking onto existentialism sound, as if the band would hammer, without mercy, rusty nails into a cross of whimsical nihilism and divine excessiveness - just to let it drown in an ocean of suicidal rhythms, deep-droning lava riffage and spectral-expanding shades while creating an out-of-body experience of sharp-edged misanthropy, claustrophobic density and oppressively intensive heaviness. CONCRETE AND PAIN. Combining Doom's long-form punishment, Classic NOLA Sludge's self-immolating riffs and the East Midlands Hardcore's throat-punching nihilism, the wretched Nottingham Sludge Doom OGs in Moloch are known for evoking a consciously unrelenting, heavy as fuck, brutal and uncomfortable listening experience, which utilizes the kind of perfected dissonance and negative space to come up with a unique take on the genre. While the band oozes with despair and hate, we rather expect to experience more of an existential hangover than the usual dope high!
