The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra welcomes back an old friend and a young star for a program featuring three prominent composers, each of whom greatly influenced each other's music. The SLSO takes on the transition from the Classical period to the Romantic with Haydn's Symphony No. 31, "Hornsignal", Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Schubert's Symphony No. 5. Conductor Nicholas McGegan leads the program, and pianist Seong-Jin Cho makes his debut with the SLSO on Saturday, February 29, at 8:00pm, and Sunday March 1, at 3:00pm.
At just 25 years old, Cho already has a bevy of awards to his name. He performs Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, which demonstrates the musical wit and Mozartian elegance the composer sought to emulate, while hinting at his own innovative spirit. McGegan returns for his annual performance with the SLSO. Widely known for his expertise in music of the 18th century, McGegan leads two pieces composed in the back half of that century, in addition to a masterpiece composed by a 19-year-old Schubert who was heavily influenced by the previous generation.
These concerts continue a SLSO tradition begun in 1944: beer and pretzel concerts. Before these concerts and during intermission, complimentary Schlafly beer and Gus' Pretzels samples will be served in the Wightman Grand Foyer.
