I was completely unfamiliar with the Ghost Riders when I saw this show. My intent was to photograph it for the university’s yearbook, the Sunburst. Since it took place in March of 1981, it was a little too late to document it in the publication because the activities section had already been submitted to the printer. I didn’t shoot photos because the band was seldom lit enough to see them. Also, they mostly played without conventional stage lighting because all eyes were on the Laserium show that was being projected on the ceiling. The most intriguing highlight of the performance concerned the thunderous drone sound of the band’s space bass, a long beam fastened to sawhorse supports that looked like a pedal steel guitar on steroids. Played with a bow, it sounded similar to one of Constance Demby’s metal bass sculptures and practically drowned out the band whenever it was played. At times it reminded me of the sound Jimmy Page would get when he played his guitar with a bow during the midsection of Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and Confused. They sounded similar to Happy Trails era Quicksilver Messenger Service.
