Barry Humphries (born John Barry Humphries, February 17, 1934 – April 22, 2023) was an Australian comedian, satirist, and character actor. Two of his most well-known characters include his on-stage and television alter egos Dame Edna Everage, a Melbourne housewife, and Sir Les Patterson, Australia's foul-mouthed cultural attaché to Britain. Humphries was also a film producer and scriptwriter, a star of London's West End musical theatre, an award-winning writer, and an accomplished landscape painter. He passed away at the age of 89 in Sydney, Australia on April 22, 2023, as a result of complications he received from hip surgery.
