Singer Harriet Wheeler and guitarist David Gavurin formed the band in college, soon adding bassist Paul Brindley and drummer Patrick Hannan. Comparisons were drawn with original label-mates The Smiths, and bands such as Cocteau Twins, and 10,000 Maniacs.
