Denver trio BLKHRTS describe themselves as M.O.P.-meets-Morrissey. Somehow, this is largely accurate. They are louder than bombs and chances are no one will top their ability to yell "Ante Up" at karaoke. For all the blood-raw intensity, their aspirations are equally high-brow: They mangle samples from the dirges of proto-Joy Division outfit Warsaw, lift loops from Eraserhead, and have hooks that interpolate Gravediggaz. But for all the gothic melodrama, BLKHRTS are capable of stripping things down to the elements.
