Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. The self-described "rock and roll band with horns" began as a politically charged, sometimes experimental, rock band and later moved to a predominantly softer sound, generating several hit ballads. They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Second only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands, Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups in history.

Chicago is named after the city in which the band formed: Chicago, Illinois. However, the band also performed under other names before becoming Chicago. These included "Big Thing" and "Chicago Transit Authority". The band officially became “Chicago” in 1970.
Chicago was first known as "Big Thing". After moving to Los Angeles, California, and signing to Columbia Records, they changed their name to "Chicago Transit Authority" in 1968. In 1970, they shortened the name to "Chicago" after their first album was released.
Chicago started with original band members Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Danny Seraphine, Walter Parazaider, Lee Loughnane, and James Pankow. There are only three original members still in the band today: Lamm, Loughnane, and Pankow.
Terry Kath was the lead singer and guitarist for Chicago. He died on January 23, 1978, due to an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot to the head with the automatic pistol he usually carried. After his death, Chicago nearly disbanded but fortunately did not. In 1997, the band members honored Kath when they released their album The Innovative Guitar of Terry Kath.
Following a party, lead singer and guitarist Terry Kath jokingly placed the barrel of his pistol next to his head. He casually said that the gun was not loaded and playfully pulled the trigger to his head. Unfortunately, the gun was loaded, and Kath accidentally killed himself. He died on January 23, 1978.
Danny Seraphine was a member of Chicago for over 23 years. In what has been called a power play, he was fired from the Chicago band in 1990 by other band members to accommodate drummer Tris Imboden.
Peter Cetera was the lead vocalist and bassist of Chicago from 1967 to 1985. He was born on September 13, 1944 and is 78 years old.
Peter Cetera decided to leave the Chicago band in 1985 to focus on his solo career. While he offered to continue playing with Chicago while also creating his own music apart from the band, the other band mates declined and replaced Cetera with Jason Scheff.
Because of his legendary career as a singer, songwriter, producer, and musician, Peter Cetera’s estimated net worth is around $40 million.
Walter Parazaider played the saxophone, clarinet, flute, and backing vocals for Chicago. He retired from touring with Chicago in 2017 following a heart condition. On April 19, 2021, Parazaider released a statement announcing that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
