Cranes is a English alternative band fronted by Alison Shaw and formed in 1986. They were originally based on the south coast of England in Portsmouth. Their music falls under gothic rock, ethereal darkwave, and dream pop. They signed to the label Dedicated and went on to record two EPs in 1990, The subsequent release of Wings of Joy (1991) caught the attention of Robert Smith of The Cure who picked Cranes to open for them on their world tour in 1992.
