Greta Van Fleet is an American rock band that first began performing and recording in the 2010s. In early 2016, a live performance of their eventual first single “Highway Tune” was featured on the hit Showtime series Shameless. The following year, the band signed with Lava Records, releasing “Highway Tune” as their first single on March 31, 2017. It was featured on their debut EP Black Smoke Rising, which dropped only three weeks later and reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart.
The band's music shares a striking similarity to the famous 1970s English rock band Led Zeppelin. The sound is so uncanny that Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin’s lead singer and songwriter, criticized Greta Van Fleet for not citing Led Zeppelin as an obvious influence but did compliment Josh Kiszka’s vocals.
Greta Van Fleet merges several genres together including blues, hard rock, folk, and progressive rock. The band offers terrific guitar riffs and blazing vocals, creating masterful and powerful heavy rock music.
All of the band members came from the town of Frakenmuth, Michigan where a person by the name of Gretna Van Fleet also lived. Kyle Hauck, one of the founding members, liked her name so much he asked her if they could use it as the name of the band. With a slight tweak to her first name, Gretna gave the band the right to use the name “Greta Van Fleet.” It’s said she’s still a fan of the band to this day.
Greta Van Fleet first formed in 2012 but would not receive mainstream recognition or success for a few years.
All of the founding members of Greta Van Fleet hail from Frankenmuth, Michigan where the band was originally formed.
Greta Van Fleet was founded by three siblings, twins Jake and Josh Kiszka and their younger brother Sam, along with their mutual friend Kyle Hauck. In October 2013, Hauck was replaced by another friend, Danny Wagner.
The ages of the original members of Greta Van Fleet are:
Founding member Kyle Hauk has chosen to stay out of the public spotlight since leaving Greta Van Fleet and has not publicly disclosed his age.
