Jimi Hendrix is often considered one of the greatest guitarists in music history. He first picked up a guitar as a teenager but did not begin playing professionally until he was discharged from the army in 1961. Throughout the early and mid 1960s, Hendrix played backup in several bands, eventually becoming the front man of the “Jimi Hendrix Experience” after moving to London in 1966. He passed away four years later in 1970.

Jimi Hendrix was born at Seattle's King County Hospital on November 27, 1942. His original name was Allen Hendrix, but was later renamed James Marshall by his father, James Marshall Hendrix.

Throughout his life, Jimi Hendrix played a variety of different guitars, but he was particularly fond of Fender Stratocasters. One of Hendrix’s most famous Stratocasters was his 1968 Olympic white Strat with a maple fretboard. Notably, this was the guitar he used when he performed at Woodstock.

However, Hendrix didn’t rely on Stratocasters alone. Another of his most famous guitars was his Gibson Custom Shop Flying V, which he pained black by hand.

"Purple Haze" is a song composed by Jimi Hendrix and released by the Jimi Hendrix Experience on March 17, 1967.

People commonly believe that "Purple Haze" refers to a tremendous psychedelic trip Jimi experienced after using drugs, however this is not the case. According to Hendrix, the lyrics were inspired by a dream in which he was able to walk underwater. When he was walking underwater, a purple haze enveloped and devoured him. Although the event was horrific, Hendrix contended that his faith in Jesus rescued him.

During his short career, Jimi Hendrix released only three studio albums and a live album.

After leaving the military, Hendrix began working as a session musician under the alias Jimmy James, providing backup for artists such as Little Richard, B.B. King, Sam Cooke, and the Isley Brothers.

Chas Chandler was responsible for bringing Jimi to London in 1966. Shortly after arriving in London, Jimi Hendrix was landing Top 10 singles in the UK, including “Purple Haze,” and “The Wind Cries Mary” In 1968, managerial responsibilities were transferred to Chas's former business partner, Mike Jeffrey.

Jimi Hendrix passed away in London on September 18, 1970 at the age of 27. Prior to his death, Hendrix had been in bad condition, due in part to overwork-related exhaustion, a chronic lack of sleep, and an alleged influenza-related sickness. Personal relationship insecurities and dissatisfaction with the music industry had also added to his unhappiness.

The autopsy concluded that Hendrix inhaled his own vomit and died of asphyxiation while under the influence of barbiturates.

Hendrix is buried at Greenwood Memorial Park, a cemetery in Renton, Washington. Renton is a suburb of Seattle in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The 27 Club consists of well-known singers who passed away at the age of 27. Between 1969 and 1971, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all joined the 27 Club. But the club dates at least back to the 19th century with Alexandre Levy, a Brazilian pianist, composer, and conductor being one of the first known members. He passed away at 27 years of age in 1892.
