Since the mid-Eighties, the gangly figure of this ageless singer has become part of the urban landscape of Kinshasa. Jupiter Bokondji and his Okwess International band have tried to resurrect some of forgotten rhythms of Congo-Kinshasa in a melting-pot style Jupiter calls “Bofenia Rock”. His music centres on the traditional “zebola” rhythms of the Mongo people. Bokondji’s sandpaper voice is as much a trademark as his angular silhouette, dangling cigarette and officer’s jacket.
