Loretta Lynn (April 14, 1932 - October 4, 2022) began her professional musical career in 1960 with the release of her now classic single "I'm a Honkey Tonk Girl." Her debut studio album, "Loretta Lynn Sings," followed in 1963 and debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Album charts. By 1969, Lynn had released 17 studio albums, averaging nearly 3 per year. Lynn's prolific career continued for 57 years. She officially retired from the music business in 2017 following a stroke. During that time, she received numerous accolades including an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music, an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom among many others. On October 4, 2022, Loretta Lynn died peacefully in her sleep.

On June 14, 1961, Patsy Cline was involved in a car accident. Though Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline had yet to meet, Lynn was inspired by Cline’s musics and performed “I Fall to Pieces” on the “Midnight Jamboree” hosted by the Ernst Tubb Record Shop, dedicating the performance to Cline.
“I Fall to Pieces” was a single released by Cline in January of that year. Up to that time, the song had trouble ranking on the charts but shortly after Lynn’s performance, the song reached the number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the Hot Country songs chart.
Not long after, the two became incredibly close friends. This friendship deepened until March 5, 1963 when Cline died tragically in a plane accident.
After Patsy Cline’s death, Lynn wrote “This Haunted House” as a tribute to her friend and mentor. While never released as a single, it was featured on her 1964 album Before I’m Over You.
Lynn additionally recorded and released I Remember Patsy in 1977 as a tribute album. It performed well, peaking at number two on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart with the first single “She’s Got You” becoming Lynn’s tenth to top the Hot Country Songs chart.
The friendship between Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn inspired the film Patsy & Loretta, which premiered on Lifetime on October 19, 2019. In the film, Lorretta Lynn is played by Jessie Mueller while Patsy Cline is played by Megan Hilty.
