After classical studies at the Namur conservatory (where he studied under Nathalie Loriers and Pierre Van Dormael), Kummert entered the jazz section of the Brussels conservatory. His teachers there included Jeroen Van Herzeele, Ron Van Rossum, Kris Defoort and Diederik Wissels. He also studied with Erwin Vann and Fabrizio Cassol.
