Rodolphe Burger passe son enfance dans la vallée de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, où ses parents possèdent une scierie. Titulaire d'un DEA de philosophie en 1980, il est professeur, puis fonde le groupe Dernière Bande à Strasbourg, qui deviendra Kat Onoma en 1986 et perdurera jusqu'en 2004. Il en est le chanteur, guitariste (développant un jeu ample, à la fois aérien et granuleux) et principal compositeur.
