The Scorpions is a German rock band that started in Hanover in 1965. The band was founded by lead guitarist Rudolf Schenker. Most of the other members of the band are also from Germany, though some hail from other European countries.
There are several stories about how the Scorpions got its band name. What we know for sure is that Rudolf Shenker was the one who named the band. Some suggest he wanted to call the band “Nameless” but found it too bland and decided to go with something a little more dangerous. It’s also rumored that in 1972, the band considered changing their name. Producer Conny Plank allegedly suggested “Stalingrad,” but the band decided to stick with “Scorpions.”
The original band members of the Scorpions were Rudolf Schenker, Lothar Heimberg, Karl Heinz Vollmer, Michael Schenker, and Klaus Meine. Over the last several decades, the lineup has changed many times.
The Scorpions formed in 1965 by Rudolf Schenker and released theri debut album Lonesome Crew in 1972. In 1973, Michael Shenker left the band, leading the group to breakup until reforming with a new lineup and a new album Rise to Fame in 1974.
The Scorpions are generally considered a heavy metal and hard rock band. During their prime (1978-1992), they were one of the biggest glam metal bands in the world but over time have experimented with other genres, including even soft rock.
Rudolf Shenker formed the Scorpions in Hanover, West Germany in 1965, performing both rythym guitar and lead vocals. In 1970, Rudolf’s younger brother Micahel and Klaus Meine joined the band. In 1972, they won a music contest and released their debut album.
There’s no exact information on how much money the band makes per concert, but according to estimates, the band could earn around $19,500 to $29,900 per month.
The Scorpions has had at least 12 lead singers since its inception in 1965. These include Wolfgang Dziony, Karl-Heinz Vollmer, Werner Hoyer, Ulrich Worobiec, Bernd Hegner, Lothar Heimberg, Michael Schenker, Francis Buchholz, Uli Jon Roth, Herman Rarebell, Ralph Rickermann, and James Kottak.
The longest-serving drummer for the Scorpions was Herman Rarebell. He played drums for the band between 1977 and 1995. Rarebell decided to leave the band because he wanted to set up his own recording label.
Scorpions has had 2,169 concerts.
