Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What genre is Screaming Trees?

Screaming Trees was one of the earliest grunge bands to emerge in Seattle, Washington. As is typical of grunge bands, Screaming Trees merged multiple genres including alternative rock, punk rock, psychedelia, country, and folk to create a “grungy” sound that almost mocked the artificially perfected sound of pop and rock coming out of mainstream studios.

What bands are similar to Screaming Trees?

Some of the most famous grunge bands that emerged in Seattle around the same time as the Screaming Trees were:

  • U-Men
  • Melvins
  • Malfunkshun
  • Soundgarden
  • Green River
  • Nirvana
  • Alice in Chains
  • Pearl Jam
  • 7 Year Bitch

As grunge spread, non-Seattle bands like Stone Temple Pilots, L7, Hole, The Gits, and others embraced the sound in their own distinctive way. Some even relocated to Seattle be a part of the original grunge scene of the 1980s and ‘90s.

When was Screaming Trees formed?

Why did Screaming Trees break up?

Between 1986 and 1992, Screaming Trees released five studio length albums, one each year except 1990. But after 1992’s Sweet Oblivion the band stopped recording as much new material, and it took nearly four years for Dust to hit the shelves. Due to continued difficulties producing a follow-up, the band officially broke up in 2000.

Who were the founding members of Screaming Trees?

The band was founded by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel.

When did Mark Pickerel leave Screaming Trees and why?
