Screaming Trees was one of the earliest grunge bands to emerge in Seattle, Washington. As is typical of grunge bands, Screaming Trees merged multiple genres including alternative rock, punk rock, psychedelia, country, and folk to create a “grungy” sound that almost mocked the artificially perfected sound of pop and rock coming out of mainstream studios.
Some of the most famous grunge bands that emerged in Seattle around the same time as the Screaming Trees were:
As grunge spread, non-Seattle bands like Stone Temple Pilots, L7, Hole, The Gits, and others embraced the sound in their own distinctive way. Some even relocated to Seattle be a part of the original grunge scene of the 1980s and ‘90s.
Screaming Trees was founded in 1984 in Ellensburg, Washington, about 90 miles from Seattle.
Screaming Trees is named after an effects pedal produced by Electro-Harmonix.
Screaming Trees did not achieve the success of later grunge acts and was unable to land any singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but “Nearly Lost You” did reach number five on the Alternative Airplay chart while “All I Know” hit number nine there and on the Mainstream Rock chart.
Between 1986 and 1992, Screaming Trees released five studio length albums, one each year except 1990. But after 1992’s Sweet Oblivion the band stopped recording as much new material, and it took nearly four years for Dust to hit the shelves. Due to continued difficulties producing a follow-up, the band officially broke up in 2000.
The band was founded by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel.
Pickerel played on five studio albums with the band but left in 1991, just prior to the production of their breakthrough album, Sweet Oblivion, feeling as if his ideas and suggestions were consistently being ignored by band mates and record producers.
After Pickerel left Screaming Trees in 1991, he was replaced on drums by Barrett Martin.
Lanegan, founding vocalist of Screaming Trees, passed away at his residence in Killarney, Ireland, on February 22, 2022, at the age of 57. No cause of death was stated.
Screaming Trees has had 235 concerts.
