While U2 might be generally categorized as a rock band, its hard to place the band’s evolving sound into a single genre. “Angel of Harlem” was written as a tribute to Billie Holiday, the famous jazz icon and human rights activist whose “Strange Fruit,” written in 1939, highlighted the horrors of lynching in the United States, which was still widespread at that time. Along with her racially motivated arrest, she became one of the earliest voices of what would later become the Civil Rights Movement.
