U2 is an Irish alternative rock band from Dublin formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's musical style evolved throughout their career, yet has maintained an anthemic sound built on Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's effects-based guitar textures.

This was at the old (now demolished and replaced) Green point Stadium. An awesome concert.. never forget Bono starting to sing to the crowd "Shosholoza" when the stadium took over. With a band entering via a huge Lemon! What more could you ask for haha
While U2 might be generally categorized as a rock band, its hard to place the band’s evolving sound into a single genre. While the earliest years featured a distinctive post-punk, alternative rock sound, U2 has embraced pop, dance, funk, electronic, and a diverse range of other elements into its material over the last several decades.
U2 was formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976.
Before becoming “U2,” the band had three names. For a brief period in 1976, it was named after then-14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr., the founder of the band, and called "The Larry Mullen Band." After a few weeks, the members renamed the band “Feedback” and then to “The Hype.” Finally, in March, 1978, the band settled on U2.”
The name “U2” refers to the Lockheed U-2, a spy plane that America developed during the Cold War. It was one of several names the band mates considered and is said to have been the one they disliked the least.
The Joshua Tree is an album released by U2 on March 9, 1987. It shares its name with Joshua Tree National Park in California.
Bruce Springsteen inducted U2 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
Bono, the prominent Irish human rights activist, is the lead singer of U2.
Bono’s real name is Paul David Hewson.
Bono is 63 years old and was born on May 10, 1960 in Dublin.
Bono is the lyricist and songwriter of U2’s song “Pride (In the Name of Love).” He wrote the song to commemorate Martin Luther King Junior's fight for equal rights. He initially thought of writing the music to condemn Ronald Reagan’s actions which Bono perceived as pushing the world closer to nuclear war. However, he later felt he was channeling his energy in the wrong direction and instead of condemning Reagan, he instead chose to praise King.
“Angel of Harlem” was written as a tribute to Billie Holiday, the famous jazz icon and human rights activist whose “Strange Fruit,” written in 1939, highlighted the horrors of lynching in the United States, which was still widespread at that time. Along with her racially motivated arrest, she became one of the earliest voices of what would later become the Civil Rights Movement.
U2 has had 1,894 concerts.
U2 is most often considered to be Rock, Pop, Electronic, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, Alternative, Classic Rock, Post-Punk, New Wave, Permanent Wave, Alternative Dance, Alternative Pop, Irish, Dance-Rock, Arena Rock, Irish Rock, Ireland, Big-Music, and College Rock.
The next U2 concert is on March 30, 2024 at Hobart Art Theater in Hobart, Indiana, United States.
