Certain General were really good friends with Band of Outsiders, another great No Wave act. They played all over downtown New York, together and separately. CBGB's, Pyramid, just everywhere. They did an EP together. One amazing night they did a joint show at Danceteria, probably 1983. It was stunning! BOO did their set, then Certain General. For the last song they all played together. A tidal wave of sound. I'll never forget that show. Ever.
Billy Bragg also did a 4-5 night rooftop stint at the Danceteria in New York in '84 or '85. Not listed here. I went most nights. I think it was the night Alien Sex Fiend was downstairs doing their thing. I always liked him. His politics. And his hopefulness. Then and now.
I saw them in 1981 at the Warner Theatre in D.C. That show's not listed here. It waws stunning. The curtain opened to reveal 8 shadowed men standing behind 8 banks of computers and keyboards. A beat drops and 16 arms just go up and down, up and down. robot-like. Then as the music builds, 8 of those arms become more human in their movements and the lights turn up. Each member had a "robot" likeness next to him. Nice.
I saw The Pogues three times in New York. I think it was at their Palladium show that House of Love opened for them. Joe Strummer was with them the last time. The first time I saw them Luka Bloom opened. Around that time, he did a set at Continental Divide, an intimate little East Village bar on 3rd & St Marks. Really atmospheric. I think he opened with "Dreams In America." Wow!
I saw TML in New York in 1987. It was either the Ritz or Irving Plaza. They opened for The Chameleons UK. Violent Femmes was the first band on. Ann odd concert given how different each band's stage persona was. A great show, though. LMT comes on real strong. Their bass player was hanging in the lobby for a while later. Friendly guy, a bit reserved.
