The band was founded by Sully Erna after his previous experience as a drummer, and early members included bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Lee Richards and drummer Tommy Stewart. After several early lineup changes, Tony Rombola joined on guitar in 1996, while Shannon Larkin later replaced Stewart on drums.
