Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou, in London England, July 21, 1948) began his music career in the 1960s performing under the stage name “Cat Stevens.” In 1977, he converted to Islam. The following year, he took the name “Yusuf Islam.” He formally retired from his music career in 1979. As Cat Stevens, he released 11 studio albums and a string of multi-national charting singles, including “Peace Train,” “Morning has Broken,” and “Another Saturday Night.” In the 1990s, he resumed his career, creating only Islamic music performed in Arabic for nearly a decade. On November 28, 2003, he performed in English for the first time in 24 years at Nelson Mandela’s 46664 concert. Between 2006 and 2014, he released three secular albums as “Yusuf.” In 2017, he released “The Laughing Apple” as “Yusuf / Cat Stevens” with “Tea for the Tillerman 2,” a sequel to his 1970 album, and “King of a Land” following in 2020 and 2023 respectively. He is 77 years old.
