Although first recorded in 1956, the song has been featured in numerous films and television series over the decades including "The Muppet Show" (1979), "Beetlejuice" (1988), and "The Amazing Race" (2020). During his life, Belafonte was also an international human rights activist. In the 1950s and '60s, he was active in the United States Civil Right Movement, being a close confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., while his final album "Paradise in Gazankulu" (1988) was a protest album against the South African Apartheid regime.
