Soilwork is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1995 in Helsingborg. The band was founded by Björn Strid and Peter Wichers under the name Inferior Breed before adopting the name Soilwork in 1996. The name reflects the idea of building from the ground up. Their early sound was influenced by bands such as Pantera, Meshuggah, and Carcass, and evolved toward a more melodic style after the name change.
