Kurt Nielsen A HIPPIE FROM WOODSTOCK At the concert in Copenhagen, Carlos Santana modestly said he was just a hippie from Woodstock. He didn’t talk much, but let his guitar say it all. He remarked that some people want good tequila, others strong weed, and perhaps someone might want a Rolls Royce. He himself, like so many hippies back then, just wished for a peaceful world. PEACE appeared on the big screen as a white dove flew across it. I first discovered Santana when I saw them in the Woodstock film. It made a lasting impression, alongside other great guitarists like Hendrix, Alvin Lee, and Pete Townshend. Particularly memorable was the long version of Soul Sacrifice, where the young drummer Michael Shrieve – only 20 years old – together with the rest of the percussion section drove the song forward, with Carlos on guitar and Gregg Rolie on the Hammond organ. Fittingly, they opened the Copenhagen concert with Soul Sacrifice and continued with several tracks from their early albums. My own first Santana record was Abraxas – full of great songs, rock, and Latin fusion. For a 15-year-old from West Jutland, it was something completely different. And then there was the album cover… especially the dark-skinned naked woman, which I studied closely. It was a dream world far from my hometown. Of course, we got Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, and Samba pa Ti. I listened to Santana a lot in the early 1970s, but my interest waned over time. It came roaring back with the 1999 album Supernatural, where Carlos played with younger guest artists. From that album, Maria Maria is well-known, and when it rang out in the Royal Arena on August 11, 2025, the whole audience got to their feet – even old me – clapping and dancing. The band that night was superb: talented singers, strong keyboards, and a big rhythm section. I was especially impressed by Cindy Blackman Santana – a phenomenal drummer who delivered a powerful six-minute solo. After her solo, her husband Carlos took the microphone for the second time that evening and praised her to the skies. They are soulmates; I believe he even proposed to her on stage many years ago. Now, at 65, she still drums with an energy that could power a train. It takes a strong woman to play like that – and she keeps herself fit. The drums are the best exercise. Carlos, now 78, moved quietly around the stage, with a chair nearby, but still played brilliantly. His tone is instantly recognizable – you’re never in doubt when it’s Carlos Santana playing. Melodic, virtuosic, and a true trendsetter. The concert was the last show of the long Oneness Tour. But it’s certainly not the last we’ll hear from him. He has a residency in Las Vegas and is even considering a collaboration with Taylor Swift. It was the first time I had heard Santana live – and it was well worth the wait. Now I want to dive back into his music, including the new album Sentient and the more experimental records I haven’t heard yet. A big thank you to Carlos, Cindy, and the whole band for an unforgettable musical experience. I went with my musical playmate, stayed at a nearby hotel, and we had dinner at a good Italian restaurant. We talked music with other fans before and after the concert. We took the train – no stress with a car. All in all, a great trip – even if, late at night, we “emptied the Øresund of cod.” Carlos Santana Aug 12, 2025
