Bill Mair The Who played a legendary, massive, general admission concert at the Pontiac Silverdome (then called Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium) on December 6, 1975, as part of their “The Who by Numbers” Tour. This event was notable as it was the first major rock show held at the newly opened stadium. It was a landmark event, both for the band's tour and the history of the Pontiac Silverdome. The concert set a world record for a solo indoor attraction with an attendance of 75,962 people. General admission meant fans rushed the gates, ripping out turnstiles for prime spots near the stage creating an unforgettable, electric atmosphere. It was an iconic, powerful show with a full Tommy segment, highlighted by a dramatic moment when the lights went out and came back on to the crowd's roar with Roger Daltrey's "See Me" during Tommy. During the show the main floor crowd surged forward causing a crush near the front of the stage. Pete admonished the crowd to move back saying "Its fucking blood and guts up here!". During band introductions, when Keith's name was announced, he came flying out from behind the drums, did a somersault and leaped into the air! I recall it being very cold inside the unheated stadium that night, with many keeping coats on, and the sound quality being challenging at times. This was my third and last time seeing The Who. This event is remembered as one of The Who's most iconic performances and a historic night for the Silverdome. Did I mention, the laser light show was amazing.
