Jeffrey Lee Never one to waste a recent headline, as exemplified in the shoddy-yet-memorable handbill; exploiting the tragic American Airlines DC-10 crash that killed 273 passengers at Chicago's O'Hare airport on May 25, 1979! A superb example of shameless self promotion! Root Boy Slim earned five gold stars with me for this unforgettable excursion into 'bad taste'...John Waters will please take note. Jeffrey Lee If there is one word I can use to describe this night's performance...it was different. Slim was in rare form; not exactly subdued, but he was not his usual fully-loaded and obnoxious self. In fact, he appeared to be taking care of himself, was very lucid, talkative and seemingly on his best behaviour. Perhaps it was because former Beatle John Lennon had been killed five days prior and the pall was still palpable. The casual atmosphere was surely a part of it too. The Hideaway Lounge was low-key because there was no stage to speak of, or glaring stage lights. The band was set up where they were comfortable and played at a volume level that reflected this. The decor was cushioned couches and chairs, some end tables, coffee tables; even a fire burning in the fireplace and a stack of ready firewood! It was by no means a sell out, packed house or standing room only...it played out like a private party among old friends in a large living room - it was almost surreal. Slim did monologues between songs, had one-on-one conversations with the audience and was even wearing bedroom slippers. Everyone had a great time, and if it weren't for the fact that my friends Joe Gillette and Jerry Pixley hadn't been there and can vouch for me...I'd swear it was the damnedest, weirdest dream. Jeffrey Lee SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL: WILLIAM BURROUGHS TURNS 70 (IN PERSON) By invitation, my friend Joe Gillette and I had the privilege and honor of meeting beat author and literary outlaw, William S. Burroughs (1914-1997) on the eve of his seventieth birthday and release of Howard Brookner's documentary "Burroughs - The Movie". In attendance was the authors friend and business manager, James Grauerholz. WPA screened a 16mm print of the film, followed by a reception at Herb's Restaurant near Dupont Circle, where Burroughs kindly autographed my first edition of "The Place of Dead Roads". William S.
