Wicked Goddess So Grant came on and did his set, and he was wonderful. I really enjoyed seeing him play live. After about an hour or so, he brought up Jon Brion and *insert drumroll* Neil Finn, to play "Honey Don't" with him. Then he brought up (Crowded House bassist) Nick Seymour. They played "Only Talking Sense" and "Four Seasons in One Day." Yeah, seeing Nick on stage playing "Four Seasons" with Neil made me a little misty eyed. Then Nick sat back down, and Grant, Neil and Jon proceeded to tear through a cover set that included David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" (with Grant singing lead, The Kink's "Sunny Afternoon" (Neil singing lead), and "Tainted Love" (Jon Brion singing lead). There were lots more songs I didn't know, including a hysterically funny and quite good improvisation built around them not understanding someone yelling out "Mean to Me." Wicked Goddess Jon Brion joined them onstage for a few songs, and Lisa Germano and Sebastian Steinberg from Seven Worlds Collide came on stage for one song. The show ended with an audience singalong of "Better Be Home Soon" where Neil urged us to "sing one for Hessie." Moving as hell. Crowded House Aug 25, 2022

Scott Marshall I don't have the set list for Aimee Mann, but I do remember the crowd begging for "Voices Carry", and Aimee saying "it's been TWENTY YEARS"; she didn't play it, and I guess I can't blame her. Aimee Mann / Honeydogs Aug 24, 2022

Jeffrey Lee Queen: More Glitter Than Gold While it rained steadily outside, inside Queen reigned unsteadily over the Capital Centre in a solo concert that, in addition to beginning 45 minutes late, was more glitter than gold. The concert ranged from the musically humdrum to the theatrically manic. Enthroned beneath a silver and black crown, 20 by 54 feet by 46 feet, their music too often became an irrelevancy. Their manic energy seemed forced; their flamboyance lacked finesse. Suffering from mild laryngitis, Freddie Mercury’s voice had difficulty holding its own, especially in the harder rock songs, where he tended to be trampled over by John Deacon’s bass guitar and Roger Taylor’s drums. Queen did not do justice to their own material, which on record can be captivating - hard rock with artistic subtlety and softer rock with sharp artistic edges. But there were moments. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was strong enough to support the general gimcrackery and “Keep Yourself Alive,” which followed, came alive. Perhaps the most successful moments were provided by “We Will Rock You,” an hypnotic, primitive song that framed the concert and that promised all measure of Dionysian abandon. At the concert’s dramatic beginning, the crown rose off the stage to reveal Queen as “We Will Rock You” throbbed the arena. While this critic perceived their crown to be slipping at certain moments, their sovereignty with the audience remained unquestionable. — Jennifer Hirshberg The Washington Post Queen Aug 24, 2022

Jeffrey Lee Queen, Thin Lizzy Up until recently, Ireland has not been known as a hotbed of rock and roll. But now that Thin Lizzy, which performed in concert with Queen last night at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House, is firmly established as one of the most exciting new bands of the mid-‘70s, that situation may be about to change. Bass player and lead singer Phil Lynott, who wrote last summer’s hit single “The Boys are Back in Town,” and played last night with a dash and verve that contrasted sharply with Queen’s mannered, routine performance, is at the center of most of this Celtic excitement. Flanked by the twin Les Paul guitars of Gary Moore and Scott Gorham, he was perhaps strongest on “Warriors,” an impassioned tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman. The blues roots hinted at in that choice of heroes was confirmed on “Baby, Drive Me Crazy,” when Gorham, the quartet’s only American member (“and we only let him in the band because he was born on St. Patrick’s Day,” joshes Lynott), delivered a stunningly funky solo that bracketed Lynott’s appealing intensity and drive. — Larry Rohter The Washington Post Thin Lizzy / Queen Aug 24, 2022
