 Dolores Worrell I was at this concert in my hometown Alexandria, VA. It’s a shame the building was torn down it should have been placed on the Historical Register. I think I went to just all of the concerts there from 1968 on…. It was great we would go hours before the doors opened standing at the top of the stairs or sometimes on the stairs. We sat on the wood floor inside the skating rink. We smoked grass with some of the band members sometimes too. Back then the security was like years later. It was a great and fun concert in fact every concert I went to was a lot of fun. Before concerts we use to bring our own roller skates and skate every weekend. I still miss it but have my memories. Vétéran de la scène, le groupe a construit un following fort depuis sa formation en 2009, tournant inlassablement et apparaissant sur des festivals tels que Dour, le Roadburn ôte ArcTangent, tout en restant fidèle à son éthique DIY et son approche communautaire. Issu de la scène techno industrielle, le duo techno franco américain Maelstrom et Louisahhh travaille en étroite collaboration depuis 2013. Ils sortent leur premier album en 2023 sur leur propre label, RAAR, conçu avec pour objectif de ‘faire de la techno pour les punks’. Construit sur une croyance bien ancrée que les processus de création sont faits pour évoluer, avec la confiance et le courage que ça peut demander, Maelstrom & Louisahhh ont sculpté une niche à part dans le monde de la musique électronique, tournant internationalement sous plusieurs formes: en tant que live hybride, comme DJs, comme perfomers solo ou en live. Peu importe la forme, l’idée de réconforter les perturbés et de perturber le confort reste au centre de leurs pratiques. La collision de ces deux mondes est un quasi-accident, une session studio au goût de ‘voyons ce qu’il se passe’, au fin fond de l’hiver, évoluant d’une idée de morceau à un album entier, écrit en 16 jours. La première chanson produite en studio devient ainsi le premier single de l’album, et son titre : ’Violent God’. C’est sans doute le morceau dans lequel les influences de chaque groupe sont les plus lisibles : Violent God combine les instrumentaux lourds et rauques de Birds in Row, avec les machines sensibles et précises de Maelstrom, et les hurlements dérangés de Louisahhh. Vacillant au bord du gouffre entre victime et bourreau, le morceau explore le gouffre entre croyance, culte et contestation. ‘Do I believe in a violent god? You make me believe’, éructe Louisahhh au-dessus d’une tempête de guitares et d’électronique, à la fois interrogative et déclarative, à la fois personnelle et politique. Tous les artistes impliqués dans ce nouveau projet sont portés depuis longtemps par des valeurs d’authenticité et d’intégrité, et perfectionnent avec constance leurs sons et leurs mots. Avec Violent God, deux mondes entrent en collision pour former une nouvelle entité, une bête aux dents plus acérées et aux griffes plus sanglantes, avec plus de tripes, et plus de poésie. Après avoir rodé sa formule sur scène lors de concerts locaux, le groupe distille un post-punk abrasif mâtiné de textures noise. Avec la hargne d’IDLES, METZ ou MAD FOXES, FRAR transforme la violence sonore en exutoire collectif : ici, on revendique la bienveillance à travers le pogo.
