Don Branson we arrived just in time for the end of Wild Belle's reggae-influenced set. she looked straight out of the 70s in a white flowing outfit. spoon was on next. they had a great set. i was only familiar with one of their songs. if you're not familar they're an alt-rock back from the late 90s with a touch of funk rhythm. we tried to guess who would be up next. i guessed wrong. Cage the Elephant appeared on a stage of steps, a wall of flames on either side. lead singer Matt Shultz stepped out in a white suit with a bee-keeper shroud over his hat. he removed it as well as many articles of clothing as set went on. he creeped and contorted as the rock star he's become doing the likes of Jagger and Mercury proud, playing to the audience and even strutting thru the crowd a few times. the music of course was awesome but combined with the stage show there was never a dull moment. Matt's niece was brought on stage and rode on the guitarist's shoulders for a song. Matt ran thru the crowd as the set ended. "we are the champions" came over the speaker and Matt stayed a few minutes on the hill and sang with the crowd. later Beck exploded on the stage with "loser", full band in tow. Darrius tells me his bassist and keyboardist are late of the 80s band Jellyfish and have been touring with him for years. all were excellent. next was "devil's haircut" and "the new pollution" for which they had a live sax player. as those are 3 of my favorite songs played in an slightly faster arrangement i super-enjoyed, i immediately wished for a live album. there was background neon flashing and graphics of Beck's artwork, etc. he slowed everything for "debra" and brought it back to the party with "wow". according to setlist.fm he did covers of "i want to take you higher", "china girl", and "search and destroy". i don't remember that but there were a few songs i didn't recognize and my musical knowledge is limiited. a crowd of beer-fueled bros danced in and out of rhythm beside us, looking as if they might breakdance if we weren't standing on dirt and grass. for the encore Beck brought Matt Shultz back up for "night running". he brought Britt Daniel from Spoon back up but i forget for what song. Matt and Wild Belle (now sporting a fancy 'scuba'-ish outfit) and bandmembers from Spoon and Cage joined Beck for an encore of "where its at" ending in a flurry of instruments and flashing lights, with Matt and Beck weirdly, wonderfully shuffling sideways off the stage like a cartoon (see video). i'd seen Cage before but their act has only gotten better. I had no idea what to expect from Beck but i was way more than pleseantly surprised. i've been a fan since "loser" in '94 and this is the 1st time i was able to see him. i think i got my money's worth from all involved and then some!  Don Branson 1st concert in over a year! Enjoyed Pom Pom squad as did proud papa MC Serch who was filming & cheering. Mia Berrin grew up in Novi & her 3rd grade teacher was there. Nada Surf was great as usual. Their drummer was more animated than I remembered (at least what little I can remember from the last show I saw in 2008). Matthew Caws recited most of the venues they'd been to in the Detroit area. Thx to Dar for letting me know about the show & pointing out MC Serch! Just so good to see live music finally! Nada Surf / Pom Pom Squad Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson Suffice to see me & dar were there and....) GARBAGE/TEARS FOR FEARS 2022 kicking off the summer concert season w/ a 95 degree show! Shirley said she forgot to shave her armpits & was entertaining between songs & of course the performance was great as always. Tears' Roland said after touring in hot southern cities he might find relief in MI. Nope! I only knew their 80s hits but i really enjoyed their show. And that lady could sing! Just getting to be at pine knob after 2 years away was so awesome! Even suspender man was there! Oh, and we got to see a drunk guy dancing & leaning over the bannister many times finally throw himself over it! (He was ok) Tears For Fears / Garbage Nov 23, 2025
Minkeyx The opener was supposed to be The Cult, FNM was a late addition and were booed mercilessly ~ every song, but War Pigs. Metallica / Faith No More Nov 23, 2025
Minkeyx Opener was Faster Pussy Cat *they got booed off stage. Alice Coope / Alice Cooper / Motörhead Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson Saw Red Hot Chili Peppers/the Strokes/ Thundercat @ Comerica. Great show! Chad had a Detroit "D" (showing his hometown pride) on his drum kit & brought out his 95 yr old moms out at the end. Flea recalled recording w/funkadelic in Detroit back in the day. Never saw signs for song requests before. It was my 1st time to Comerica, what a great venue w/great view of the city skyline! Red Hot Chili Peppers / The Strokes / Thundercat Nov 23, 2025

Don Branson Jimmy Eat World w/Charly Bliss: the latter had a great set as usual, even when Eva's just-a-bit-too-enthusiastic dancing knocked over the mike stand. Jimmy Eat World kicked off a streak of 5-6 songs, rocking them extra hard. Their new song was great too. They need some better ventilation in there but otherwise it was a great show! Jimmy Eat World / Charly Bliss Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson irreverence was the theme of this show. Jeff Rosenstock opened with a flurry of punk rock & wacky commentary & ending playing sax atop the crowd. Gaslight anthems' Brian Fallon spoke to the audience betwixt songs about various topics like poutine & home repair. Their set was good as always. The upper-upper balcony was so much roomer & cooler than St. Andy's GA & the view was great! Also forgot whilst in line for the show we saw a dirt bike/atv flash mob being chased by the cops on Woodward. The Gaslight Anthem / Jeff Rosenstock Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson it was weezer's 10th show on the tour and me & dar's 10th time seeing them in concert! Momma was good as was Modest Mouse, albeit more funky than i expected. Weezer opened on a set that looked like the dashboard of a car complete with radio (which rivers started a song, stopped, turned the radio dial to 5, stopped again, then turned it all the way up!), steering wheel, rear view mirror and the "windshield" was where the graphics were projected. backdrops included a road of course, the cover to the Pinkerton album, and rollerskating/dancing figures). rivers did a duet with the girls from Momma on rare b-side "i just threw out the love of my dreams". there was an acoustical section with 'in the garage' and 'Suzanne'. another rarity 'blast off' made an appearance. the boys did an encore with many riffs and flashing lights. so glad to see the lads again after 4 years! Weezer / Modest Mouse / Momma Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson Last Friday I went to see Tommy Davidson headlining a Def Comedy Jam-style show (w/ a DJ) of 5 comedians presented by Livewaves & Mobile network at the Saginaw Dow. Tommy was dope as always &:sung some 70s deep soul cuts at the end. the others all brought their "A" game as well. The MC was particularly funny! Tommy Davidson Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson this was probably my favorite stand up show of all time! opener (can't find his 1st name) Adams was hilarious with observations of covid (his father's taste test for covid), dating at various ages & other things. davison came out talking low & slow but quickly exploded into the type of act he's known for. various voices, pantomine, sound effects, funny faces were all on display fueled by a ton of energy. i'd get into some here but i can't do it justice in type (*smack* REALLY?!?--that's for Dar). the way he moved around-the small stage barely contained him. he got some good material out of the guy he mistakenly thought was wearing Flyers gear (it was Red Wings!). classic bits were present too like the national anthem and dr jekyll/sammy davis jr which he sang as & closed the show with. we MORE than got our $25 worth! mark ridley's comedy castle is a nice venue. roomy but intimate enough to display stand-up well. it was great being relatively close to the performers. plus its in royal oak which is not far from dar's place so we didn't have to deal with much traffic. Tommy Davidson Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson it rained off and on that day but luckily we got pavilion tickets on the $25 all-in deal (and not too shabby seats to boot!). we came in on the last 3-4 songs on metric's set. i was surprised i recognized all the songs since i only own one album. they closed on 'black sheep' from 'scott pilgrm' which was awesome! Garbage was great as always. the first third of the set was mostly newer album songs with them finishing strong on more of the hits. shirley was entertaining with jokes about her menopause (the humidity made if feel like she was having hot flashes) and mentioning the picture she took of the crowd last time was photobombed by 2 racoons hanging out in the rafters. Noel Gallagher's HIgh Flying Birds was an 'alright' set. he had what looked like 10 ppl with him including 3 backup singers. the flowery set looked like it was set up for a wedding or something. Noel got in a little banter with the crowd up front but i couldn't break thru his thick accent. he got in a couple of Oasis songs in the middle i didn't recognize but finished with "don't look back in anger" which was cool to hear live and is still stuck in my head! Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds / Garbage / Metric Nov 23, 2025
Don Branson I knew none of the songs by any of the bands (dar is the Braid fan) but everyone was excellent! Braid performed a whole album completely & did an encore of several more songs from their catalog. 1 singer/guitarist went into the crowd to sing along & later another moshed with some fans. It woulda been more enjoyable if it wasn't 4 hrs of 1000 degree HEAT in there! It was still a good time despite the heat (still not as bad a st. Andrew's) & nice to finally visit TLT post-pandemic.
